I sync Aradius sites data as backups to several servers and services around the world; on top of that I regularly use rsync to mirror those data to my local NAS to keep as a local backup. While doing this entire backup thing for the sites, I’ve realized that I never backup any of my computers.

So I signed up for Amazon S3 and get myself JungleDisk (A tool to backup and restore your computer’s data to S3 with encryption). I have roughly 8GB of data on my drive (that are related to work) with contents ranging from photo images to my personal scripts (mostly bash scripts that I wrote for server maintenance).
While my FIOS is fast (downstream wise), the upstream was only 2Mbps, and it took me almost 14 hours to get those 8GB of data backed up on S3. So I called Verizon and upgraded my FIOS to 15Mbps downstream / 15Mbps upstream package – surely enough, I have it activated within 24 hours.
I was able to upload my files at 9Mbps, not quite near the 15Mbps promised, but none or less, I tried to run the backup again (starting from scratch) to see how long it would take with my new upload speed and I’m getting estimated 2 hours and 23 minutes. So are the $20 increases on my bill worth the upgrade? In my case where I have to keep up with so many data backup, it really does worth every penny of it.
